Home > Hints & Tips > Choosing A Rainwater Tank That is Right for You
Installing a rainwater tank is a great way to save money and the environment. It can also ensure your lawn and garden look great all year round, even in times of low rainfall. There are, however, a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing a water tank.
1. What the water will be used for
Water that is collected by your water tank can be used for watering the garden and lawn, washing the car and topping up the swimming pool, even when water restrictions are in place (confirm this with your local council). Using a simple system the tank can also be connected to the house and the water used for toilet flushing and in the laundry, potentially saving a considerable amount of water that would otherwise have come from mains water. Installing an automatic diverter can switch to mains water when the tank is empty.
Knowing what the water will be used for is important when determining what system you will require and in deciding on the size of the tank, which leads on to our second point.
2. What size tank you need
Water tanks come in many different sizes and shapes. The size of the tank that you require will depend upon what the water will be used for (how much storage you need), how much roof space you have (how much water you can catch) and where you plan on putting it (how much space is available).
Water tanks can range from small 500 L domestic tanks up to 50,000 L industrial-sized tanks and above, and may be stored on the ground, mounted to the wall or if the tank is concrete construction it can be partially/completely underground. Depending on the available space, you may also opt for the typical round tank, a slimline tank or a bladder tank that can be stored in the cavity under your home or deck.
If you opt for a large tank, you may require structural support so it is important that a professional be consulted.
To calculate the size of the tank you need, Bushman’s Tanks has created this Tank Calculator.
3. What is the most suitable material
Water tanks are available in a number of different materials however different materials are suitable for different applications. Water tanks are commonly available in polyethylene (plastic), fibreglass, galvanised steel and concrete. Polyethylene tanks are lightweight, durable and available in a range of colours. They are also often the cheapest option. In contrast, concrete water tanks, while being robust and strong, are very heavy and difficult to handle. Depending on space, large tanks may be more suitable for underground installation, which can be expensive.
The intended use, size, available space and budget for your tank will determine which material you choose. Your local council may also have regulations regarding the type of water tank that can be installed.
